BRYC Dives Head First Into Old Dominion Soccer League
Ten New Squads to Compete During Fall 2013 Season

After an absence of several years, in the Spring 2013 season BRYC returned to the Old Dominion Soccer League (ODSL) in the form of the U12 Girls "Rage", coached by Jim Clark, assisted by Fred Welther.  It took a daring first step.  When two U12 Girls teams both won their divisions at the Herndon All Star tournament in the fall of 2012, Coach Clark floated the idea with BRYC Recreational Soccer about the possibility of returning to the ODSL, which represents a step up the competitive ladder from the traditional recreational soccer program to the professionally coached BRYC "Elite" travel program.  Rec Soccer saw it as the perfect time to get our feet wet once again.  BRYC named John Davis, our Referee Director to be our ODSL Club Representative, a roll later assumed by Rage mom Kimberly Yeo, working with Coach Clark, to make it happen.  And it has.  After a "so-so" innaugural season of league play that was topped off by a win in the West Virginia Mountaineer Classic, the Rage will be back at it again in the Fall 2013 season.

This time they won’t be alone!  Not even close.  BRYC’s ODSL participation was expected to grow in the coming years but not quite so fast!  After spring tryouts, no fewer than ten new ODSL squads, boith boys and girls, have been formed for the Fall 2013 season from a nucleus of former All Stars and experienced BRYC coaches.  We wish them all well and look forward to posting st0ries on their successes in the days ahead.

Three BRYC Squads Win ODSL Sportsmanship Honors
U9B Strikers, U10G Panthers and U12 Girls Lightning Do BRYC Proud

Each season the coaches in the ODSL vote for a team in their division which exhibits the best sportsmanship toward opponents, referees and opposing fans.  The prestigious award is named after Randy Rawls, one of the leagues original founders and its first President.  The award honors the winner’s sense of fair play, something for which Randy was renowned as he sought to bring soccer opportunities to the youth of Northern Virginia.

BRYC is pleased to announce that three of its first-year ODSL squads have been honored with the award for the Fall 2013 season, including the U9 Boys Strikers, coached by Yong Kim; the U10 Girls Panthers, coached by Mike Newman; and the U12 Girls Ligntning, coached by John Decker.  (Only three other soccer clubs earned more honors.)  BRYC prides itself for a record of sportsmanship and fairplay and we are very proud that these three teams continue in that tradition.

Each of the winning teams will receive a handsome team trophy and individual awards for each team member, coach and assistant.  Teams that are returning for the Spring 2014 season will receive tickets for players and coaches to a DC United or Washington Spirit match where they will be honored at halftime.

BRYC ODSL Teams Have Great Fall Season Results -
Two Teams Placed First and Two Placed Second!

BRYC's twelve ODSL teams had a great fall 2013 season, with four of them placing in the top two of their respective divisions!  Three of the twelve squads couldn't be ranked as U9's or else BRYC would have had even more in the top two based on their season play.

Congratulations to U11B BRYC Lions and U13G BRYC Rage for their first place regular season wins! Coincidentally, both teams went into their final game of the season undefeated, and each played to a tie game against the second place teams. (The Rage gave up their only goal of the season in the closer.) Congratulations also go to U11B BRYC Gunners and U16/17B BRYC Lumark SC for their second place division finishes!  Every ODSL team fought hard all season to be competitive, and we had great results!  Bring on the spring 2014 season!

BRYC Dynamo Supports Breast Cancer Awareness
U10 Boys ODSL Squad Sartorially Splendid for the Month of October

Beginning with the Battlefield Tournament over the Columbus Day weekend, where they boys made it to the finals with a 3-0 record before losing a heartbreaker to Vienna Youth Soccer (VYS) in the finals, Coach Anthony Pagano’s U10 Boys Dynamo have shown BRYC’s colors well...and with a bit of their own socks to show their support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Coach Pagano says "there’s hardly anyone on the team who doesn’t know somebody close to them who has been affected by that disease."

It was the coach’s son Nathan who suggested the team should do it and the rest of the team supported the idea enthusiastically as "one small way we could show our support for those who have suffered from (breast cancer)."  Kudos to the boys for their initiative and thoughtfulness.
