I am honored to be nominated for a position on the BRYC Board of Directors. Our family has been a part of BRYC since 1997 and my children have played soccer, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, and baseball for BRYC and other clubs. I have coached soccer from ages U6 to U14, kept time and score for basketball, served as a line judge for volleyball, and cheered as a parent for uncountable games.
I served on the BRYC recreational soccer executive committee in several positions over the past ten years, including League Director, Communications, and Referee Director. Some of the projects I have been involved with include transitioning from in-person to online registration, school and roadside advertising, the Wakefield synthetic turf project, and policy rewrites ranging from financial reporting to all-stars participation.
My other volunteer activities include:
- Served on two homeowner Boards of Directors, focusing on transition from builder management to homeowner management. Led self-help efforts by homeowners to improve common area landscaping, establish long-range financial plans, and to create community rules and procedures documents.
- Served on a community pool and recreation club board during a time of severe financial challenges. Led the effort for a major capital improvement fund drive and subsequent renovation of the pool. Designed and implemented a financial management system to provide meaningful information to the Directors and to improve the security and tracking of cash received in daily operations.
- Currently serve on the rules and discipline committee for the National Capital Soccer League, and on the Virginia Youth Soccer State Adjudication Committee.
- Assist in the classroom of our elementary school, helping with small groups and individual tutoring.
In my professional life, I served in the Navy as a Weapons Systems and Shipboard Engineering Officer, and as a Communications Watch Officer ashore. Following that I had a career in telecommunications and information technology integration and acquisition in both federal government and defense contractor positions. More recently, I served as corporate secretary and treasurer for a technology startup company, responsible for managing daily cash flow and all federal and state reports and tax filings.
In the interest of full disclosure, I receive money from BRYC for some of my referee activities and for painting lines on soccer fields. Obviously I would not participate in Board votes affecting this compensation, nor would the other Directors who are referees or are paid for their services.
I believe the next several years will provide tremendous opportunities for our club. My interests are in strategic planning and growth of the club. We have the potential to add six to eight all-weather synthetic playing fields to provide much additional field time for all of our outdoor sports. I would like to help increase the number of sports and growth of existing sports, so that every child has a place to play in BRYC from novice to top-competitive levels.
I would seek to start a web-based information and discussion forum, along with an e-mail notification system where each member of BRYC can choose how much information they receive and their level of participation.
BRYC has a proud history and promising future. I am privileged to be a part of it. Thank you.
