Can Spring Be Far Behind?
Winter Snow Blankets Chapel Square

One of BRYC’s greatest assets, right behind our volunteers, is our fields...and one of the gems of the system is Chapel Square, at one end of which sits Braddock District’s most recognizable landmark, the charming Wakefield Chapel, built in 1899 and now owned by Fairfax County.

Once equipped with permanent goals which led to almost-as-permanent bare spots (which became slippery mud holes in even the lightest rain) , Chapel Square field has been brought back to great condition thanks to some nurturing by BRYC and, more recently, Annandale Boys and Girls Club (ABGC) who share use of the field most seasons.  After the fall season, ABGC once again leveled, aerated, seeded, and blanketed the field in the hope of a few more blades of grass before the spring season.

In January that blanket was covered by a blanket of another sort...25 inches of white stuff.  Soccer might have to wait for a few weeks, and who knows whether any of that grass seed will germinate, but for now, sledding and opportunities for "snow art" make the Chapel Square field a wonderful community resource while we wait, and the snow-covered chapel is a photographer’s delight.
