As DC United makes a valiant effort to qualify for the MLS Playoffs, as of this writing sitting in 7th place and needing to rise just one spot to sixth), BRYC volunteers will be there to cheer them on. Supporting the Black and Red, BRYC has purchased a small group of season tickets for many years and distributed them to volunteers as our way of saying "Thank You" for the hours and hours (in many cases, years and years) of commitment to the organization.
Indeed, of the current BRYC EXCOM, at least ten members no longer have a child involved in the program yet have continued to support the program for as many as 12-15 years after their "playing days" ended. Rewarding that kind of commitment, and even rewarding some of those who simply step up with extraordinary efforts for just a day or an evening on Uniform Night or Photo Day, with a couple of DC United tickets, is the least we can do to one place and their contributions.
(If not for the tickets, but simply for the joy of working with other dedicated parents and contributing what you can to continue making BRYC the premier sports league in the area, won't you join us?)
So it was that in mid-September that four of the longest serving and most active volunteers in the organization along with four referees were rewarded with tickets to a Wednesday night game vs. Minnesota United (they stole our name!). It was Armed Forces Night, with all linds of extra pomp and ceremony to make it that much more special. And DC United notched a hard-fought 2-1 win! It was a scoreless match through the first half of play and had everyone glued to their seats. Then, in the second half, as this reporter roamed the stadium looking for other photo angles and unique shots, the teams woke up, scoring a total of three goals before the final whistle.
As of the writing of this story on September 25, DC United stands just five points out of the playoff mix, has two games in hand with six regular season games remaining, and five of them at their beautiful new Audi Field home. Here are just a few more shots from the contest, with more than fifty of them posted on BRYC's Facebook page, "BRYC Soccer". Enjoy. Think about getting out to a DC United game before the regular season ends. It isn't RFK Stadium any more, and the Black and Red are in the thick of it as the regular season comes to an end.
