With the large number of U12 girls registered in the recreational program this fall, BRYC entered two teams in the end-of-season Herndon tournament to give a reasonable number of them a chance to participate. That can sometimes have the effect of diluting the strength of both teams. Not this year! In a remarkable showing, the two teams, playing at separate fields in groupings of eight and ten teams, came out at the top of their divisions.
Both teams finished Saturday’s sedding games with very respectable records of 2-0-2. Each was seeded in third position entering Sunday’s competition. For the "United" team coached by Tom Mastal and Tom Small, that meant playing a 7:30 AM game on Sunday to move any further in the tournament. After ending regulation time against Annandale in a 0-0 deadlock, the girls went on to beat them 2-0 in penalty kicks to move on to an afternoon contest agaist the number two seeded team from Prince William where they once prevailed on PKs, moving them to the championship game. For the third time of the day, the BRYC girls ended regulation time in a draw but prevailed on penalty kicks, earning them the championship trophies. Congratulation to United!
In not quite such heart stopping fashion, the other team of U12 girls, coached by Jon Fredrick and Ed Gagermeier, only had to play two games on Sunday but they were also against the first and second seeded teams. The girls first beat number two Sterling by way of yet another shootout before taking on first seeded Annandale in the championship. They won that game by a score of 3-2 in the only one of five games the two teams played that day without having to go to PK’s. Congratulations to the coaches and their girls for doing BRYC proud!
