Each season the coaches in the ODSL vote for a team in their division which exhibits the best sportsmanship toward opponents, referees and opposing fans. The prestigious award is named after Randy Rawls, one of the leagues original founders and its first President. The award honors the winner’s sense of fair play, something for which Randy was renowned as he sought to bring soccer opportunities to the youth of Northern Virginia.
BRYC is pleased to announce that the U13 Girls Ligntning, coached by John Decker, managed by Siobhan Starrs, becomes the first BRYC squad to have achieved the honor for the second time, after having also been honored in their first season in the league, Fall 2013. BRYC prides itself for a record of sportsmanship and fairplay and we are very proud that this squad continues in that tradition.
Perhaps especially noteworthy this year is that the girls won the award despite a win-loss record that might have seriously discouraged them. Their final game bodes well for the spring season, when they tied a team from Loudoun (1-1) that went into the game with a chance for the division title, only to be derailed by a group of girls who never gave up, playing their best game of the season with a lot of heart...and great sportsmanship. Congratulations to coach Decker and the girls for a job well done.
The BRYC Thunder U9 Girls (ODSL) team finished their Fall 2014 regular season undefeated, with seven wins and a tie. While Up game results aren't officially recorded on the ODSL site, this new ODSL team, playing together for the first time in the Fall 2015 season, coached by Kyle Allison and Bill Brosseau, surpassed all expectations by recording four shutouts, scoring a whopping 34 goals while holding opponents to only seven.
As a cap to the fall season, Thunder participated in their first tournament. Playing through the freezing temperatures, Thunder placed first in their flight with two shutout wins. Unfortunately the team suffered its first defeat of the season with a 1 to 0 loss in the semifinals. Thunder will continue to work hard over the winter in preparation for the Spring of 2015.
Congratulations girls, and good luck next Spring!
The BRYC Dynamo U11 Boys (ODSL) team finished their Fall 2014 season with a perfect 8-0 record, en route to their first-ever Division Championship in just their third season in ODSL, and hot on the heels of taking Finalist honors in Spring 2014. The Dynamo, coached by Anthony Pagano with the assistance of Michael Cranna and Julie Little, scored 44 goals with only 8 goals allowed – both best in Division 2 - while beating all comers. Dynamo’s success has been building since its inaugural season. Dynamo also took Finalist honors in both the 2013 and 2014 Battlefield Tournaments, earned ODSL Division 3 Finalist honors in in the Spring 2014 season, and have lost only one game in their past two ODSL seasons. The Dynamo boys will continue their rise to Division 1 in Spring 2015, where they hope to bring home more silverware. Congratulations Dynamo!
